Website Ranking on Google

The position your pages hold in Google's organic results for your potential customers' searches, and the work that moves them up, starting with what matters most.

A list of search results with an arrow moving one page to the top

Website ranking is the position your pages hold in Google's unpaid results when someone searches for what you offer. If your site exists but doesn't appear for those searches, or only shows up on page two, this service finds out what is holding it back and fixes it, starting with what matters most.

We are an Italian SEO agency that works online. For English-speaking clients that usually means one of two things: a foreign company that wants its site to rank on the Italian-language searches of customers in Italy, or a company that wants its site to rank in more countries and languages, which is the work described on our international SEO page.

Who it is for, and who it is not for

Our website ranking service is right for you if:

  • your site exists, but appears rarely or too far down for your customers' searches;
  • you have lost rankings and traffic and want to understand why;
  • you want to depend less on paid advertising;
  • you can make changes to the site, yourself or through whoever manages it.

It is not right for you if you need results within days: that is what advertising is for, for example a Google Ads campaign.

Indexing first, then ranking

Google works in three steps, described in its guide to how Search works: it crawls pages, indexes them, that is, it stores them in its archive, and only then shows them in the results, in an order that changes for every search. A page that is not in the index cannot rank, however well it is written. That is why the first check is always the Page indexing report in Search Console.

What we check, following Google's guidelines

We start from your customers' searches: the words they really use, which are often not the ones you use. Then we look at the site on these points.

  • Content. Google wants pages written for people, with original, useful information, and explains how to recognize them in its guide to helpful, reliable, people-first content. Often the problem is not a lack of text, but that no page answers that exact search.
  • Titles and internal links. The title is the first thing people read in the results, and Google explains how it chooses it on its page about title links. Important pages must be reachable through links Google can follow.
  • Mobile version. Google indexes and ranks pages based on their smartphone version (mobile-first indexing): if text or links are missing on mobile, as far as Google is concerned they are simply missing.
  • Speed and experience. Core Web Vitals are used by the ranking systems, but Google itself states that a good page experience does not replace relevant content. We fix them when they are a real problem, not to chase a score.
  • Links from other sites. Google uses links to assess how relevant pages are, which is why it treats bought or exchanged links as spam (spam policies). We only do link building with earned links.
  • Local searches. If customers come to your premises, your Google Business Profile matters: local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence (Google's guide).

The same points decide your presence in AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google writes that the same Search best practices apply there (AI features and your website).

An example: two pages for the same search

When two pages on the same site answer the same search, Google often shows only one of them, and not always the right one. We found this on our own Italian site: an old blog article about website ranking answered the same question as our Italian service page. On October 2, 2026 we moved its best parts into the service page and set up a 301 redirect from the old address, so Google has only one page to show for that search.

It is a fix that already shows up in the audit and doesn't require new content. On a site with a few years of articles behind it, it is usually not the only case.

Ecommerce, local businesses and company websites

The levers are the same, but how much each one weighs depends on the type of site.

  • Ecommerce. Category pages and product pages matter most, written for customers' searches and not copied from the manufacturer, and so do filters, which must not generate thousands of near-identical pages. With Google Merchant Center, products can also appear free of charge in the Shopping tab. More on our ecommerce SEO page.
  • Local businesses. The game is played on Maps and in "near me" searches: a complete Google Business Profile, the same name, address and phone number everywhere, Google reviews requested within the rules, pages dedicated to the area served.
  • Company and professional websites. Service pages that answer customers' questions, guides and in-depth articles: these searches often have less volume, but every visit is worth more.

How we work

The method is the same as our SEO consulting: an initial audit, the plan with the searches to target, then a monthly cycle of technical and content work, with Search Console and Analytics data in the report.

What we deliver

  • The initial audit, with a list of what is holding back your rankings, ranked by impact.
  • The plan, with the searches to target and the pages to improve or create.
  • The change log of the work done each month, with the reason for each change.
  • The monthly report, with rankings, organic traffic and leads from Search Console and Analytics data.

What we don't do

  • We don't promise rankings or dates: Google decides them.
  • We don't buy links to push the site up and we don't use networks of sites: they violate Google's spam policies.
  • We don't stuff pages with keywords and we don't publish mass-produced content.

Timelines and costs

Timelines depend on the condition of the site, the competition in your industry and how consistently the work is done. In our experience the first signs, meaning more impressions in Search Console and pages moving up, usually appear within 3 to 6 months. Google, on its page Do you need an SEO?, writes that it generally takes four months to a year to implement changes and see the benefits.

The cost depends on the size of the site, the competition and the amount of work: we set it in the quote, after looking at the site. As a reference, our monthly SEO consulting starts at €300 a month + VAT, with no lock-in: every month you decide whether to continue. The full price list is on our SEO pricing page.

Where to start

Your point of contact is Eugenio Tommasi, who has been doing SEO since 2009 and founded SEO SRL in 2021. Contact us with your website and the searches you want to rank for, and he will reply to you personally. You can write in Italian, English, Spanish, German or Portuguese.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work on sites built by others?

Yes. We need access to Search Console and Analytics and the ability to make changes to the site, directly or through whoever manages it. If the platform doesn't allow you to edit page titles, text and URLs, we say so in the audit.

Do I need to rebuild my site to rank better?

Almost never. The work is usually done on the pages you already have: content, titles, internal links, technical errors. A rebuild is needed when the platform blocks these changes, and in that case it has to be planned with redirects, so you don't lose what the site has already earned.

Can you help my site rank in Italy if my company is based abroad?

Yes. We work online and optimize the Italian version of your site for the searches Italians actually make, then measure the results in Search Console. If you also need leads quickly, we can run Google Ads campaigns for the Italian market.

Can anyone promise the top position on Google?

No. Google itself says so: no one can guarantee the number one spot. Rankings change with Google's updates and with your competitors' moves. We commit to the method and show you the data every month.
